Delhi Sultan, Sikandar Shah Suri (AH 961-962, 1554-1555 AD), Silver Rupee, 11.31 gms, 23.26 mm, Lahore Mint (off flan), AH 962, Obv: Sultan Sikandar Shah Isma'il Sur al-mutawakkil ala'llah khallada Allah mulkahu darb lahore, Rev: Shahada and caliphs type 3, the letters hi occur both above Allah in the shahada and in the top obverse margin, various mint-marks are found on these coins, Sikandar Shah Suri was a short-lived Sultan of Hindustan from the Sur dynasty in 1555 CE. His original name was Ahmad Khan Suri, and after seizing power he assumed the royal title Sikandar Shah Suri, Before proclaiming himself Sultan, he served as the governor of Lahore, an important administrative and political center of the Punjab during the Sur period. Coins, including silver rupees, were minted at Lahore in his name, highlighting the city’s significance under his authority. Although his reign was brief, Sikandar Shah Suri’s association with Lahore represents a notable episode in its medieval history, during the intense struggle between the Mughal and Sur empires for control of northern India, G&G # D1150, very fine, very rare.
