He succeeded his brother Nasir-ud-Din Haidar Shah and was succeeded by his son Amjad Ali Shah. A devout Shia Muslim, he is remembered for his patronage of religion, architecture, and the arts, rather than military or administrative reforms. His reign issued silver and gold coins from Lucknow, which are important for Awadh’s numismatic history. Despite political instability, Awadh remained culturally vibrant under his rule.
