Jaunpur Sultanate, Nasir ud-Din Mahmud Shah (AH 844–861 / AD 1440–1456), Gold Dinar (Tanka), 11.54 gms, approx 20.30 mm, Obv: In tughra-style calligraphy, “Nasir ud dunya wa'l din abu'l mujahid, Mahmud Shah bin Ibrahim shah al-sultan”. Rev: Arabic legend “fi zaman al-imam na'ib amir al-muminin abu'l fath khulidat” within an inner circle; “zarb hada ad dinar fi sana Hijri” in the margin. G&G J10 (R). NGC AU 58. Free of test marks, sharply and centrally struck, with superb definition and attractive toning. Rich goldenrod surfaces display lustre glowing between the intricate calligraphic strokes, Gold tankas of Nasir ud-Din Mahmud Shah featuring tughra-style obverse calligraphy are extremely rare and seldom encountered at public auction. This specimen combines elegant calligraphy with an exceptionally well-defined strike and pleasing lustre, extremely rare.
