Ancient, Post-Mauryan, Kaushambi Area, Cast Copper, 1.07 gms, 11.39 x 11.97 mm, Obv: Humped bull walking to left side below wavy line, on top left taurine and on right top svastika, Rev: Tree-in-railing with four compartments on left side and on right side four orb ujjaini and open hollow cross,Present coin represents a very important series of local type copper cast coins of Kaushambi. These are said to have been issued in early 1st century BC to atleast 1st century AD i.e. chiefly during the period when the control of Magadha’s pan India empire was substantially lost over most of the areas under their control. This is thus a local series which lasted less than 2 centures and represents well executed fine symbols, many of which directly derived from Mauryan punch marked coinage in silver. Bop & Pieper # 10, very fine, scarce.
