Ancient, City State Issue (c. 200 BC), Tipuri (Modern name Tripuri), Narmada Valley, Copper Unit, 8.35 gms, 20.65 mm, Obv: Three arched hill with crescent above open hollow cross and Brahmi legend in left field ‘Tipuri’, Uniface, Ancient city of Tripuri was the capital of Kalchuri dynasty (prolific stone inscriptions / copper plates reported so far). Its present remains have been identified with a place called Tewar near Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Tripuri’s ancient history is however a bit obscure and is known (earliest phase i.e. around 3rd to 2nd century BC) only through coins. It might have been under Datta dynasty, Satvahanas, Bodhis from time to time. From Gupta period onwards, we find regular references of this illustrious city state of ancient India. P. Kulkarni # ICS Newsletter no. 37, very fine, very rare.
