It served as a major military, administrative, and commercial centre, regulating the movement of imperial officials, armies, merchants, and goods between the Mughal heartland and the north-western frontier. During the reign of Muhammad Shah (AH 1131–1161 / AD 1719–1748), Sirhind continued to prosper owing to its strategic location on the Delhi–Lahore highway and the fertility of its surrounding agricultural hinterland. It remained an important administrative headquarters and a notable centre of Islamic learning and religious activity. However, the period also witnessed the gradual erosion of Mughal authority; repeated Sikh incursions, increasing regional instability, and the devastating invasion of Nader Shah in 1739 weakened imperial control, marking the beginning of Sirhind's decline from its former prominence despite its continued importance as a military and commercial waypoint, KM # 438.21, extremely fine, rare.
